When I was a teenager, I could always tell when my mom was upset with me. She had this unmistakable look that could pierce directly into my soul in a matter of seconds. When I saw the look I instantly knew – I’ve done something wrong, she knows it, and I’m about to be punished. I’m sure your mom had one as well. In fact, I’m fairly certain there’s a secret club out there somewhere where mothers of teenagers are taught how to find the perfect “you are busted” face.

Jonah 2:1-2 says, Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, saying,“I called out to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. (ESV)

Jonah’s in the belly of a giant fish because of his actions. His disobedience. He knows he’s done something wrong, and even more, he knows God knows it. This is the moment when all logic tells us that Jonah should be punished. He’s done something wrong and he’s been caught.

But God doesn’t punish him.

Instead, Jonah cries out and God hears him.

• Do you tend to think of God as a malevolent God who punishes people for their sins, or a loving God who answers people in the midst of their sin?
• What is something that you need to cry out to God about today but you’ve been too afraid of how He might react? Go ahead, talk to Him about it.

 
 
 

Jonás Día Cuatro | Semana Dos

Cuando era adolescente, siempre podía darme cuenta cuando mi mamá estaba molesta conmigo. Tenía esa mirada inconfundible que podía penetrar directamente en mi alma en cuestión de segundos. Cuando vi la mirada, lo supe al instante: hice algo mal, ella lo sabe y estoy a punto de ser castigado. Estoy seguro de que tu madre también tenía uno. De hecho, estoy bastante seguro de que hay un club secreto en algún lugar donde a las madres de adolescentes se les enseña cómo encontrar la cara perfecta de “estás atrapado”.

Entonces Jonás oró al Señor su Dios desde el vientre del pez. Dijo: En mi angustia clamé al Señor, y él me respondió. Desde las entrañas del sepulcro pedí auxilio, y tú escuchaste mi clamor. Jonás 2:1-2

Jonás está en el vientre de un pez gigante debido a sus acciones. Su desobediencia, Jonás sabe que ha hecho algo malo, y más aún, sabe que Dios lo sabe. Este es el momento en que toda la lógica nos dice que Jonás debe ser castigado. Ha hecho algo mal y lo han atrapado.

Pero Dios no lo castiga.
En cambio, Jonás clama y Dios lo escucha.

• ¿Tiendes a pensar en Dios como un Dios malo que castiga a las personas por sus pecados, o un Dios amoroso que responde a las personas en medio de su pecado?
