Read: Jonah 1:1-17 >>

As we read through the book of Jonah, it will be easy to focus on Jonah being swallowed whole by a large fish. We can ponder what it would be like to live inside a fish for three days and three nights only to be violently expelled onto the shoreline unscathed (OK…so no, I’m more than fine in not having a mental file folder for the whole ordeal!). It’s also easy to think the lesson is all about missions and taking God to unchurched people groups. Though this is an integral part of our calling, this is not the heart of the book of Jonah. The real heart of the book of Jonah is: God’s wonder, awe, and unfailing love on display for people both near and far from Him.
Because he was a prophet of the Lord, Jonah had an intimate relationship with the creator of heaven and earth. God would speak to and through Jonah. God would have revealed some of His thoughts and desires directly to Jonah so much so that Jonah fully understood the depths of God’s unfailing love for all people, even the Assyrians (think of a nation that was the most violent, vile, and corrupt nation at the time).

These next few weeks, I’m going to ask you to pay attention to those far from God (the sailors, the king and the people of Nineveh) and how they responded when God revealed Himself. Amid the storm, the pagan sailors cried out to God; Jonah slept. As the pagan sailors prayed for deliverance, Jonah slept. The pagan sailors sought forgiveness and did everything in their strength to save one life, Jonah. The King and people of Nineveh repented in sackcloth and ashes…even the animals were in mourning. Yet, our hero, the one who knew better, allowed his personal contempt and defiance to trump personal responsibility and action. Jonah ran, ignored, and grumbled because he knew better.
As the saying goes, “familiarity breeds contempt.” I wonder if this is exactly what transpired with our “hero” Jonah. In Jonah’s familiarity with God, did he lose the awe and wonder of God? Did he forget it was God’s will and God’s sovereignty that bears fruit? Did Jonah believe he was more important, more valuable, and more knowing than Yahweh?

Reflect

• When was the last time you recognized the wonder of God? When was the last time you were in amazement of God’s greatness and goodness? Has your familiarity with God dulled you to who and what HE is?
• Take time to slow down and look, really look for where God is working. In your struggles, have you embraced the idea that you know better than God? Is God trying to show an area or areas in your life, where you are refusing to allow him in?

 
 

Jonás Día Tres | Semana Uno

Mientras leemos el libro de Jonás, será fácil enfocarse en Jonás siendo tragado entero por un gran pez. Podemos reflexionar sobre cómo sería vivir dentro de un pez durante tres días y tres noches solo para ser expulsados ​​violentamente a la orilla ilesos (OK… así que no, estoy más que bien al no tener una carpeta de archivos mental para todo el ¡prueba!). También es fácil pensar que la lección se trata de misiones y de llevar a Dios a grupos de personas sin iglesia. Aunque esta es una parte integral de nuestro llamado, este no es el corazón del libro de Jonás. El verdadero corazón del libro de Jonás es: la maravilla, el asombro y el amor inagotable de Dios que se muestran por las personas tanto cercanas como alejadas de Él.

Por ser profeta del Señor, Jonás tuvo una relación íntima con el creador del cielo y de la tierra. Dios hablaría a ya través de Jonás. Dios habría revelado algunos de sus pensamientos y deseos directamente a Jonás, tanto que Jonás entendió completamente la profundidad del amor inagotable de Dios por todas las personas, incluso los asirios (piense en una nación que fue la nación más violenta, vil y corrupta en el tiempo).

Mientras leemos Jonás, les voy a pedir que presten atención a aquellos que están lejos de Dios (los marineros, el rey y la gente de Nínive) y cómo respondieron cuando Dios se reveló. En medio de la tormenta, los marineros paganos clamaron a Dios; Jonás durmió. Mientras los marineros paganos oraban por liberación, Jonás se durmió. Los marineros paganos buscaron el perdón e hicieron todo lo posible para salvar una vida, Jonás. El Rey y el pueblo de Nínive se arrepintieron en cilicio y ceniza… incluso los animales estaban de luto. Sin embargo, nuestro héroe, el que sabía más, permitió que su desprecio y desafío personales triunfaran sobre la responsabilidad y la acción personal. Jonás corrió, ignoró y se quejó porque sabía mejor.

En la familiaridad de Jonás con Dios, ¿perdió el asombro y la maravilla de Dios? ¿Olvidó que era la voluntad de Dios y la soberanía de Dios lo que da fruto? ¿Jonás creía que él era más importante, más valioso y sabio que Yahweh?

Reflejar

• ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que reconociste la maravilla de Dios? ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que te asombraste de la grandeza y bondad de Dios? ¿Tu familiaridad con Dios te ha embotado para saber quién y qué es ÉL?
• Tómese el tiempo para reducir la velocidad y mirar, realmente buscar dónde está obrando Dios. En tus luchas, ¿has abrazado la idea de que sabes más que Dios? ¿Está Dios tratando de mostrarte un área o áreas en tu vida en las que te niegas a permitirle entrar?
